Clean teeth make people feel confident while interacting and this boosts up their growth in professional as well as personal life. Having healthy teeth is a very big discussion and many advices need to be followed for this purpose. In this article, we'll be understanding how to get clean teeth and how clean teeth improve oral health.

    1. What are Tooth Stains and Calculus?

Brown color coating can be seen on the teeth and that is coating is stain. Due to certain reasons like toxic or chemical intake continuously for a longer time increasing the quantity of stains and your teeth start appearing brown or black.

Calculus is white or yellow or grey colored hard coating on the teeth, which keeps increasing due to poor oral hygiene. You can see calculus very easily on teeth near the gums. If this calculus is not cleaned then it may enter into your gums and can cause major issues.

    2. Causes of Staining and Buildup?

Stains are of two types intrinsic(due to internal factors or changes) and extrinsic(due to external factors). So all the internal and external factors which can convert teeth into brown or black color are causes of staining.

Internal factors include genetics, age, medications for any other diseases, etc.

External stains are caused due to regular and more consumption of tea, coffee, soft drinks and beverages. Smoking is the most common reason for staining of teeth.

Calculus has a very big reason that is poor oral hygiene. Most of times people don't know the right way of brushing teeth and this keeps on increasing the calculus and making it harder. This reduces the gums and exposes teeth.

    3. Impact on Oral Health

Stains keep increasing if not cleaned properly and if habits are not changed within time. There are some layers to every tooth structure and if these stains increase, they start penetrating into deeper layer. They also damage enamel(outermost layer of tooth) completely.

Calculus can reduce the gums' size and expose roots of the teeth which are covered under gingiva(gums). So this can cause a new problem called gingival recession. This can make your teeth move at early-stage, which may lead to teeth loss.

Brush your teeth twice a day, change your toothbrush every 3-4 months and use soft brush for prevention of stains and calculus.

    4. How to prevent Staining ?

To prevent any disease it is advised to reduce the cause. So here also you need to identify what caused staining in you teeth and then reduce the cause. Next important stage is to learn the proper techniques of brushing. There are different types of brushes (hard, medium, soft). These brushes are wisely indicated and you need to decide what kind of brush will suit you. Regular visits to your dentist will definitely benefit you in achieving stain free clean teeth.

    5. At-Home Remedies?

Regular brushing for 2 times a day is of utmost importance. You need to change your brush in every 3-4 months as the bristles get flared and can cause gingival recession. Once again reduce the cause (stop smoking, reduce hot/cold beverages). Baking soda can help but only for short duration, it won't clean the teeth completely. Apple cider vinegar, if used in very small amounts can help in reducing stains.

    6. Professional Cleaning Options

It is said that you should normally visit a dentist regularly for routine checkup, so this should be done. Ultrasonic Scaling and root planing are the treatments done by dentists to completely clean the stains and make the teeth clean. Along with this, if the calculus goes inside the gums then curretage is done to avoid further reduction of gums.

    7. Teeth Whitening Options

In-clinic treatment offers fast results in teeth whitening. If the stains are very stubborn then this is way better option than ultrasonic cleaning. At-home kits are also available but they may take time to show results. There is one more option of whitening strips. Please be cautious with charcoal products as it may result in gingival reduction.

    Conclusion:

If you want to maintain clean and healthy teeth you need to take care of them regularly. It is always said that prevention is better than cure, so visit dentist in 4-6 months depending on your habits is very necessary. This can help in identifying problems if any.
